Embarking on a family sailing adventure is more than just a dream; it’s an incredible journey filled with adventure and learning. In July last year, with the sunlit Mediterranean as our backdrop, we set sail aboard our NEEL 51 Trimaran, "Living The Dream," from the beautiful shores of Cyprus. Our quest led us to breathtaking destinations, providing an unforgettable experience filled with growth, exploration, and treasured family moments.
Setting Sail from Cyprus
Our journey began in Cyprus's clear, azure waters, where we paused to relish the calm before embarking on our life-changing voyage. Setting sail as a family meant more than just traveling across the globe; it was about discovering who we are as individuals and how we fit together as a unit.

We set our compass towards Gibraltar, a destination representing adventure and challenge. We navigated through picturesque islands and lively ports on our way, letting the wind guide our course. During this passage, feelings of excitement mixed with a tinge of anxiety, creating a thrilling brew that all sailors know well.
An Epic Trip to Morocco
Reaching Gibraltar felt like hitting a mini milestone, allowing us to set off on an epic trip to Morocco with friends. This remarkable country unfolded a tapestry of rich culture, stunning landscapes, and precious family memories.
We immersed ourselves in the vibrant colors and sounds of the buzzing bazaars. Every twist and turn led us to aromatic spices and traditional music, expanding our understanding of the world. The local hospitality left a lasting impression, making us feel more than just visitors. After soaking up Marrakech’s charm, we returned to Gibraltar, ensuring the kids could go trick-or-treating with friends.
Striking a balance between adventure and normalcy was our aim during this journey. We needed to maintain our family dynamics while embracing the changes that adventure brings.
Journeying to the Canaries
Next, we set sail for the Canaries, where Virginia, Findlay and Tillie embarked on a separate adventure to spend Thanksgiving in Virginia's hometown of San Diego. During this time, I prepared for one of the biggest challenges of our journey to date—an Atlantic crossing.
This segment became one for the books, with variable weather and some admittedly overly conservative sailing (I didn't want to break another spinnaker!), lasting 23 days. Assisting in the rescue of an immigrant boat 100s of miles offshore, and listening to reports of personnel falling overboard from other boats, was sobering. But with the support of friends and a ready supply of flying fish for breakfast, we arrived in Rodney Bay unscathed. Sailing across the vast ocean can feel isolating, yet the sheer beauty of the ocean never got tired.

Reuniting with Virginia and the kids for Christmas in San Diego transformed the whole experience. Our family celebration added warmth and joy to our adventure, while New Year's fireworks back in Rodney Bay ignited feelings of hope and excitement for the year ahead.
Joining World ARC and Facing Challenges
When we rejoined "Living The Dream" in Rodney Bay as participants of the World ARC, we prepared for the next leg toward Colombia. This part of our journey was filled with intense challenges, including facing big waves and minor mishaps that started to test us as a crew.
However, these hurdles bolstered our confidence. While sailing through the San Blas Islands in Panama, we found tranquility amidst the chaos. The stunning beauty of the landscape reminded us of life’s wonders and the importance of resilience.

The Panama Canal Adventure
The next highlight was transiting the Panama Canal— a true engineering marvel. Witnessing the intricate operations of the locks and learning about their history was a motivating experience.
In Shelter Bay, we bonded with fellow World ARC participants, sharing laughter and stories while completing necessary boat jobs in La Playita. This camaraderie was vital as we prepared for the next chapter of our adventure.
We briefly rested in Las Perlas before tackling the daunting 850-nautical-mile stretch to the Galapagos Islands. This journey was another test, as we battled headwinds and countercurrents that slowed our progress significantly. Where were those trade winds that everyone keeps talking about?
Discovery in the Galapagos
Upon reaching the Galapagos, all previous difficulties seemed to vanish. The stunning marine life greeted us like an old friend—sea lions lounging on rocky perches, graceful turtles gliding beneath the waves, and blue-footed boobies performing delightful antics (and leaving a not-so delightful mess on the deck)!
We moved from our anchorage in San Cristobal to Isabel Island, exploring each island as much as possible: cycling, snorkeling, and kayaking. These experiences allowed us to immerse ourselves in this exceptional ecosystem.
As we prepare for the next leg to the Marquesas Islands, I am filled with anticipation for what lies ahead. It feels surreal that this challenging adventure has brought us to places most only dream of visiting.
Reflections on Our Journey
Looking towards the horizon, we are immensely grateful for the opportunities the open sea offers. Our voyage from Cyprus to this point is a powerful reminder of our commitment to adventure and family.
By embracing risks and the unknown, we have truly learned what it means to "Live The Dream." Each encounter with different cultures, the wonders of nature, and strengthening our family bond makes this journey transcend beyond just sailing—it is about connection, resilience, and rediscovery.
Here's to new horizons, new friends, and uncharted territories awaiting us in the Marquesas!
